Who Are We?

Derman Enterprises Inc. is a business that has evolved from Derman Holdings Inc., which was formed in 1997. From 1997 through 2002, the business consisted purely of consulting services. The transformation into the current corporate structure positioned us to more easily accommodate some of our longer-term goals and growth plans.

We've always been fortunate to have various contacts who have delivered a fairly steady stream of consulting engagements. Historically, most of the consulting work has been performed on behalf of other consulting firms, often to bring their own consultants "up to speed." To learn more about the nature of our consulting work, see our Consulting section.

During 2003, we also began putting some products together. To that end, we developed a list of potential software products and narrowed it down to a short-list. We started work on FolderControl in November, 2002 and on LicenseControl early in 2003.

We are small business with the principals being a father and son team. The father supplies 30+ years of experience and the son supplies much brain power, youthful exuberance and constantly challenging questions. Yes, we are enjoying ourselves!

Our Mission

To create and deliver high-quality products that add value at a reasonable price.

Our Goal

To have some fun while accomplishing our Mission (well, as much fun as one can have while working, anyway).

Our Motto

It's possible to get serious work done ... without always being too serious.

What's Planned for the Future?

In 2004, we finally started on a book and a tool focused on capturing software requirements using Use Cases. Along with the book, we plan to deliver ReqControl, a tool that creates a model as a result of capturing the requirements/Use Cases via the methods discussed in the book. The book will include some new concepts that we've not seen published elsewhere, 'though we've used them on multiple projects over multiple years. The examples in the book will be mostly from our own product work.

Yes, we do "practice what we preach" and yes, it is possible to have a rigorous process that adds significant value ... even for very small teams! The challenge is to have a level of ceremony (overhead) that's appropriate for the size of the team and reporting requirements of the project. In our business, this often requires a ruthlessly pragmatic approach that remains focused upon business objectives and doesn't get defocused by technology. We are skilled at instilling this in other projects, as well (see our Consulting Services page).
