Mr. Derman tends to focus more on the earlier lifecycle parts of the development process ... business process, software requirements, analysis, software architecture and high-level design. These are the areas of larger impact with potential for greater added value.
There are relatively few people who have Mr. Derman's level of large-project experience. However, even with that background, he still advocates the minimum level of formalism that will enable the most agility while still satisfying the development-process and business requirements.

Mr. Derman worked at Rational Software during the 10-year period that saw the formulation, birth and maturation of the Rational Unified Process (RUP).
He was part of "the movement" and has always been focused upon the pragmatic application of RUP in real projects, not just the academics.

About My Consulting Approach
My approach is to lead by example and work myself out of a job as quickly as possible. My strategy is to leave your team with the ability to do what I can do. I'm not interested in simply putting in hours doing the work myself. I get my satisfaction from seeing others gain new skills and in leveraging capabilities through others.
I'm also used to being thrown into tough situations ... projects that are either struggling or in serious trouble. I thrive on being able to quickly assess the situation, recommend actions to correct the primary issues, build consensus on the approach and get the team focused on solving the right issues. I also have a reputation for being able to get teams working in a very cohesive manner, very quickly.
