LicenseControl - Documentation

Throughout the documentation, any items that are platform-specific will be accompanied by an indicator graphic:

  • PC indicates that the item applies only to the PC/Windows environment
  • Mac indicates that the item applies only to the Mac OS X environment

All other items apply to both environments.

It is often best to start by reading the LicenseControl ReadMe document first as it contains useful information on various topics, including installation and setup. The LicenseControl Manual documentation is designed as reference documentation.

Both the LicenseControl ReadMe and LicenseControl Manual documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF) and are included within the LicenseControl application where they are available via LicenseControl's Help menu.

Note: This documentation is for older versions of LicenseControl. The current versions of the Manual and ReadMe documents are also available for download.

In addition, see the LicenseControl overview page for more information about the benefits, features and system environments supported by LicenseControl and see the LicenseControl support page for access to current product-related information.

Finally, a cross-platform version of the LicenseControl Manual is presented below.

LicenseControl - Overview

LicenseControl implements a licensing strategy that:

  • keeps you in control of your licensed software, complete with the ability to easily move it from system to system, to back it up, etc.
  • does not require you to:
    • supply some unspecified information about your system to some server
    • connect to some local or third-party server every time you use your licensed software
    • regularly connect to some server that has the specter of tracking more than just your product licenses
    • install and manage centralized or local licensing server(s)
    • worry about using a licensing system that relies upon "hacks" that pose a risk to your system's operability
  • supports both PCPC/Windows and MacMac OS X environments

LicenseControl presents its licensing capabilities via the product Licensing window.

The following graphic shows the updated user interface for Mac OS X versions, beginning with LicenseControl version 2.00, aka 1.64 (see the LicenseControl History for more information).

Note that the terminology has also changed:

  • Install is now Activate
  • Relinquish is now De-Activate
  • Retrieve and Install is now Re-Activate

The documentation on this web page does not use this updated terminology.

Installing a License

Licensing a product requires that a License Request be generated and submitted to obtain a License which is then installed. This process is completed automatically, via the Internet. To license a product (press the More Information button for an explanation of the re-licensing concept):

Option 1 : Supply Your License ID and Press the "Install a License" Button

If this is the initial licensing of this application, you'll need to use this option:

  • License ID: If a system-based copy is available (e.g., via the Kagi email from a purchase), the easiest way to do this is via regular copy and paste methods. If the License ID is entered manually, please be sure to capture every character, including spaces, as each is significant and required. Note that the License ID is equivalent to a password to your License and should be guarded accordingly.

  • Install a License: Optionally, this will present a Software License Agreement for acceptance, then will communicate with the licensing server to obtain your license. Once obtained, the license will automatically be installed. When the licensing process has been completed, the License Status and Expiry Date items are updated. The Progress Status indicates progress during the licensing activity. The entire process should only take a number of seconds to complete.

We have provided detailed information about the content of the Re/License Request, along with instructions for capturing and verifying what's actually communicated to the licensing server.

Option 2 : Press the "Retrieve and Install an Existing License" (or "Reinstall an Existing License") Button

If this application (or another license-compatible application) was previously licensed on this system, you can use this option, for convenience. In this case, you won't need to supply your License ID.

  • Retrieve and Install an Existing License (or "Reinstall an Existing License"): Optionally, this will present a Software License Agreement for acceptance, then will communicate with the licensing server to obtain your license. Once obtained, the license will automatically be installed. When the licensing process has been completed, the License Status and Expiry Date items are updated. The Progress Status indicates progress during the licensing activity. The entire process should only take a number of seconds to complete.

Relinquishing a License

An installed License can be relinquished (i.e., temporarily returned to the licensing server) so it can be reused to license any license-compatible product on a different system. To move a licensed product to a different system, it is necessary to relinquish the license on the original system then move or install the software on the appropriate system. A relinquished License can be reused by supplying the License ID and using the "Install a License" button.

To relinquish a License:

Press the "Relinquish a License" Button

  • Relinquish a License: This will communicate with the licensing server to uninstall and relinquish your license. When a License is relinquished, the application is reverted to Trial-mode status. When the unlicensing process has been completed, the License Status and Expiry Date items are updated. The Progress Status indicates progress during the unlicensing activity. The entire process should only take a number of seconds to complete.

We have provided detailed information about the content of the Unlicense Request and the Unlicense Confirmation. Furthermore, we have provided instructions that enable you to capture and verify what's actually communicated to the licensing server.
